Meaning:

Panchamrut or Panchamrit is a combination of two words “Pancha” meaning five and “Amrita” / “Amrut” meaning ambrosia ((in classical mythology) the food of Gods for gaining immortality, or a sublimely delicious food) ie. Nectar - A drink or beverage of Gods.
Panchamrut / Panchamrit is the nectar of Gods and medicine for good health for humans, that emerged from the “Samudra Manthan”  or “Ksheera Sagar Manthan” meaning churning of the ocean of milk. It is also called as Charnamrit in some parts of India. The recipes differ somewhat even though the basics are the same.

There are many important health and medicinal of benefits of Panchamrut / Panchamrit:

It enhances physical strength, immunity, potency, intellect, memory, grasping power, creativity, improves complexion, cleans and glows your skin. It is also an energy booster for mother and baby during pregnancy and a tonic for brain development.

It is recommended to consume freshly prepared Panchamrut daily, about two table spoons / or as per doctor’s prescription preferably in the morning on an empty stomach.

Panchamrut / Panchamrit / Charnamrit recipe is a sacred mixture of five nectars taken in equal proportion which represent for different things viz. 1) Milk  -  for the blessing of purity and piousness 2) Yoghurt  -  for gaining prosperity and progeny 3) Honey  -  for a sweet speech 4) Ghee  -  for victory 5) Sugar  -  for happiness. The water is for purity. Just as all religious Hindu Pooja / Puja and functions require the Panchamrut as a Prasad to make it complete. Panchamrut / Panchamrit is also made by taking reducing proportion of its constituents ie. Five parts (tablespoons) of first constituent milk, four parts of Yoghurt, three parts of Honey…and so on.

Right method to make Panchamrut / Panchamrit:

Take milk in a bowl, and add all other ingredients one after another, in the order as above, and stirring each one gently so as to mix it properly.

After Pooja, distribute Panchamrut / Panchamrit as Prasad to all, and offer the leftover if any, to a plant pot or Tulsi if not used up.

Most south Indians add ripe banana instead of sugar.

In Palani Murugan temple, Tamil Nadu, Panchamrita is used in Abisheka and distributed as Prasad in huge quantity. Panchamrut / Panchamrit / Charnamrit is also used as a skin cleanser.

All religious Hindu Pooja and functions include Panchamrut / Panchamrit / Charnamrit as Prasad. It is offered to the Gods and is considered as most auspicious and highly pleasing to the deities. For a different taste you may add some Tulsi or Holy Basil leaves or banana.

Basil makes the Panchamrut / Panchamrit even more holy as goddess Laxmi is said to reside in Tulsi plant. The Basil or Tulsi was one of the 14 Gems that were obtained out of the churning of the Milkyway or the Samudra Manthan. During Shravan Maas, temples all over India worship the Shiva Linga with huge quantities of Panchamrut.

How to make Charnamrit in a simple way:


Take the whisked curd in a vessel and add the Milk, Sugar, honey and sugar to it to your taste. Now mix it well with a spoon. Add the Tulsi leaves to it and offer it to the Gods as an honest offering, to make all your hearts wishes to become a reality viz. being prosperous, healthy, living a very happy long life and or a happy and blissful long married life. Adding a few drops of Ghee is optional.
